Shoes.com Shuts Down Without Notice

So long Shoes.com. The Vancouver-based online shoe retailer announced Wednesday without notice that it was shutting down its operations immediately.

In a statement, the company said it will take all three of its e-commerce properties—Shoes.com, OnlineShoes.com and ShoeME.ca—offline, along with closing the two Shoes.com brick-and-mortar stores in Vancouver and Toronto. It is working with its secured lenders to determine the process to liquidate assets and currently intends to assign some or all of the group companies into bankruptcy.

Shoe.com’s staff of 200 were made aware of the decision Wednesday morning. A limited group of employees will stay on through the next few weeks as the company winds down all operations.

The e-tailer was the recipient of the Retail Council of Canada’s 2016 E-commerce Experience Award, honored for its innovative and personalized online user experience that integrates the use of artificial intelligence-powered technology, brand storytelling, and touch points across web, email, blog, social media and mobile.

However, trouble was brewing. The Business in Vancouver reported layoffs and delayed store openings in November 2016. The company also faced lawsuits from the B.C. government and Swim Recruiting in BC Supreme Court.
