Online fashion retail site Lyst has released their 2016 fashion trends recap, based on consumer data collected from their site.
Footwear was once again one of the most popular items bought on Lyst this year, with around 25 percent of shoppers buying footwear each day. Of those shoes sold, Puma had a surprising rise in popularity.
While unable to top Nike or Adidas, the brand saw a massive 183 percent increase in popularity among online shoppers. Puma’s ability to come up from behind is likely thanks to the athletic brand’s collaboration with superstar Rihanna, who’s Creeper design has been a best-seller.
While sneakers continued to be a driving force in footwear, Lyst also named slides as one of their trending items from 2016. With sales growth of 476 percent over last year, Lyst credits the trend to fashion’s current obsession Alessandro Michele, who’s backless loafers for Gucci were a major hit.
Taking Gucci’s most iconic item and simply collapsing the back heel, Michele transformed the classic piece into something that feels effortlessly luxurious and a little rebellious. With several renditions, including collapsed back, slipper, and fur covered slipper, Lyst says the fur covered Princetown was the most popular on the website.
For 2016, the terms “backless” and “slides” were the most searched on Lyst’s flat shoe category, illustrating the slipper obsession created by Gucci.
Lyst also saw an interest increase of 810 percent for pink items in 2016 compared to 2015. While fashion and streetwear has been under the influence of a pastel wave trend, Pantone deserves credit for declaring the light pink Serenity as one of their two colors for 2016.
