Ahead of the upcoming show in Las Vegas (Aug. 15-17), MAGIC has revealed the themes bringing newness to the male footwear circuit in their Spring ’17 men’s footwear report.
Dress and street combine to create a clean slate for men for spring. MAGIC called out key styles, including desert boots and “subdued sneakers, loafers and oxfords.” The silhouettes key into activewear with futuristic athletic details like breathable mesh uppers, elastic sides and aggressive rubber soles. Meanwhile, the looks receive a luxe touch with leather linings and contrasting leather laces and pull tabs.
The lumberjack look cleans up as brands take a “traveling nomads” approach to rugged footwear. Think fashion for eco lodges and “glamping” as opposed to mountains and trails. Shoes—mainly chukka boots, boat shoes, ankle hiking boots and fisherman sandals—continue to have utilitarian features like lugged rubber soles, rubber toe caps and D-ring laces. However, they’re smartened up with quilted leather, nature-inspired prints and elements of city-centric driving loafers.
That hybrid of styles is carried into a new class of sneaker boots for spring. MAGIC reported that monochromatic high-top boots are modified with buttery soft leathers that give a “relaxed drape around the ankles.” The boots create a whole new profile for the men’s market. Closures also add depth and visual interest. Rubber bands cut across the vamp of dress shoes; biker zippers dress oxfords; even T-bar closures make an appearance for fearless fashion risk-takers.
Punk-inspired fashion is back for the more traditional “bad boy.” According to MAGIC, hard-edge styles, including creepers, combat boots and engineer boots, are enhanced with shoe piercings, ultra-thick crepe rubber soles, weighty buckles and double monk straps. Contrasting white laces add a rockabilly vibe to the total package.
