What’s Hot at Sole Commerce

Sole Commerce at Coterie capped off a month of footwear trade shows in style. Exhibitors at the New York-based show, part of the UBM family, presented edited versions of their Fall ’17 collections, choosing trendy over basic.

Diffusion line Nanette Nanette Lepore brought its embroidered collection to the next level by adding 3-D butterfly motifs to a range of suede boots. Patricia Jasmin, national sales manager for Vida Shoes International, said the brand received positive response to its embroidered styles last fall that it decided to up the ante for 2017. The 3-D elements were carried into a line of sweet white and black leather sneakers with brushed gold hardware.

Embroidery made its way onto a range of deep blue velvet slides and block heel sandals. Most of the highlights in the Nanette Nanette Lepore fall line centered on wearable heels or flat slides, like a range of simple slipper slides offered in merlot suede, soft metallic gold and embellished with regal flourishes.

Crystals and pearls decorated ankle boots with flared heels. The heels also appeared in a collection of slouchy knit boots with an unforgettable floral pattern.

André Assous elevated wardrobe staples with unexpected trims and fabrications. Bestselling styles like leather slip-on sneakers available in white, black and beige were trimmed with jewelry-like shiny gold chain. The brand also updated block heel ankle boots in metallic tapestry and embellished with touches of bohemian embroidery. Boots were winterized with accents of fur on the tongue.

New brand Stivali zeroed in on new classics, pairing smooth and textured leathers. The Colombia-based brand presented a new twist on snake, highlighting diamond shapes.

Stivali’s navy blue suede boot—a refreshing break from black—stood out with a contrasting leather fold down.

Quirky British brand Irregular Choice played with novel themes, including the introduction of a line of city-themed heels. Miami’s art deco architecture and New York City’s skyline served as inspiration for the collection. The New York shoe even lights up.

Oversized 3-D appliques fluttered off the sides of ankle boots, while cherry prints and Christmas-themed T-strap heels were key going into holiday. The brand also previewed a collaboration with The Muppets available in October.

Meanwhile Brazilian brand Schutz amplified its dress styles with satin (the next velvet?) and flashy crackled silver and gold uppers. Pearls decorated a collection embossed croc. Sling-back heels brought drama with a deep vamp, like high-end styles by Celine.

With the market oversaturated with mules and slides, Schutz turned its attention to shoes with ankle straps. Pumps, sandals and backless loafers are updated with straps and ribbon ties.

The label played with new fabrications, including Lurex ankle boots and a bootie with a stretchy fishnet stocking upper. The eye-catching style was a fresh alternative to cage silhouettes. The brand is also aiming to sway its customer to black leather instead of nubuck for a crisp and dressier look.
